Expedition Island, Rock Springs, WY (May 2021) Blog post 149

Image
We left Vernal, Utah, heading to Rock Springs, Wyoming. Pulled off the road for a quick bathroom break and noticed that we were entering the Flaming Gorge National Recreational Area, though I did not notice anything different.  We are staying at the Rock Springs/ Green River KOA for 3 days. Took a drive to Expedition Island in Green River, Wyoming. This is a nice (1 mile) area with paved walking/bike paths that parallels the Green River. From what we read, this is the area for white water Kayaking, but we were not able to locate any. Saw a fish swimming up stream. LOL you would think I had not seen a fish before. ROCK SPRINGS/GREEN RIVER KOA: $51/NT FHU 50 AMP This KOA is a very nice and clean park with plenty of space between other Rvers Check-in system for after hour check-ins EXPEDITION ISLAND : Apparently this is a known spot for white water kayaking, though none were out the day we visited. My guess, too early in the year yet.

After leaving Helper, Utah, we headed towards Vernal, Utah. We took the Highway 40/191. As we got higher in elevation it began to rain and then as we got even higher it started to snow. We stopped at the summit which was 9,114 ft and colder. The snow started to come down harder and thicker and all I wanted to do was get off that mountain and not stuck in snow. We arrived to the Fossil Valley Rv park $51/nt. I don't recall the park and neither of us took any pictures. We took a drive to Steinaker State Park and Red Fleet State park to see about kayaking. STEINAKER STATE PARK : After finding the entrance, we drove until we found parking, but the walk down to the water or boat ramp for that matter was a very long walk or drive, so we continued on to the Red Fleet State Park RED FLEET STATE PARK : BEST KAYAKING TO DATE By far the best place we have kayaked. The views are breathtaking; the rock formations and striations are incredible. This is a must place to kayak or paddleboard. Aft...

After leaving Delta, Utah, we arrived into the Castle Gate RV park in Helper, Utah. During our week stay, we took 2 bike rides, along the Price River, passing the Mining & Railroad Museum, and Castle Gate Mountains. We also drove to the Scolfield State park and Reservoir. We took a very short walk down to the Price River, that parallels the park and which was only about 75 ft from our RV.  LOL, when I booked this park I thought we could do some relaxing kayaking. Below are some great pictures and videos of the river showing that this is not an inflatable kayak friendly river (at least this section of the river). CASTLEGATE RV PARK ($48/nt @weekly rate) Almost had the whole section to ourselves SCOLFIELD STATE PARK AND RESERVOIR IN CARBON COUNTY, UTAH Took a nice drive to Scofield State Park. We first stopped off to play and take pictures in the a mound of snow off the side of the road. It didn't take long before we were back in the truck, because I was so cold!  We ...
