Learning to RV together! Blog post 22

When our 5th wheel first arrived, we were both so excited to start practicing hitching up and actually tow. We both wanted to practice to hitch up. I was so excited to try myself. It was not as easy as I was hoping it to be. I actually wrenched my back trying to lift myself up high enough to see if I was lining up, while still able to reach the gas and brake pedals. I gave it 3 tries before my frustration took over. Neil, gets in and is able to hitch up on the first try-argh....... I would not be defeated, I was determined to learn how to hitch up. I just kept trying. It usually would take me 2 attempts before I got it. Neil read somewhere that using an orange traffic cone helps line up. OMG I will not hitch up unless my orange cone is in place, it works beautifully.

When we were out practicing, and Neil was driving, it was my job to give directions. We learned that we communicate really well when I am driving and he is out giving directions.

So I do 98% of the drivng. I reverse the truck into hitching position and between our communication we hitch up on the first time, almost everytime.

Neil is amazing at giving me directions when backing into a RV site. He can just see exactly where and how I need to turn the truct to get the 5th wheel into the site.

Neil tells me how incredible I did backing up and I just look at him and say " if I had to do that without guidance we would not be in the site" and I probably would have cause more damage to the RV.

Another area that we needed stronger communication was when we would arrive at an RV site or when leaving. We each have our duties that have to be done. Once we would arrive at a site, I would want to get into the RV right away to get the slides open and start getting throw rugs down for when the dogs come in. There is one problem, electricity is needed.

After getting upset with each other, we finally sat down and discussed each others needs. We will work as a team. Someone has to watch the dogs while the electricity, water, and sewer are connected. Once the electricity, water and sewer are connected, then Neil would give me the all clear for him to watch the dogs, so I could go in an open up the inside.

Since identifing our roles and when to do such roles, we have settled into RV life and I don't hate travel days anymore.
