Autumn, the last of our Golden babies left us way too early (3/23/20) Blog post 48

We left Glen Oaks on Saturday 3/21 and stayed at KOA Barstow for 1 night, before we headed to Lake Isabella for 3 days.  On Sunday 3/22/20 I woke up and noticed that Autumn is not responding to me. I immediatley went and got Neil. Autumn would not respond to him either. We tried putting food in front of her nose, but no response. Every few minutes she would let out this cry, but not alert. We hurried so fast to get the RV closed up so we could get on the road.  Of course it is a Sunday and we are in full Pandemic mode. No emergency vets open until Bakersfield. We got Autumn onto the stretcher and we carried her all the way down the ramp and to the truck. One of the neighbors saw us struggling and ran over to help get her into the truck. It was the longest and hardest drive. There was nothing we cold do to help her everytime she moaned. I could not drive fast enough while staying safe. We arrived at Lake Isabella Rv park. I think we had the RV backed in, unhooked within 10 minutes,  and then we drove another hour down the mountain to Bakersfield.

We arrived at the Vets and within 30 minutes, we learned that she was in a Diabetic coma. Her blood sugar was in the high 400's. She most likely was experiencing pancreatitis and that explained her moans.  The doctor told us that they would be treating her with insulin and IV fluids. We would return in the morning to pick her up.  I called around 9pm to check on her and they told me that she was responding to treatment.

At 7:30 the next morning, I received a call from the clerk at the vets informing me "I am sorry to tell you that your dog did not make it through the night."

What do you mean my dog did not make it through the night? We were told that she was doing better. Our hearts were completely torn apart and broken. We did not get to say goodbye to her. She died alone, and that is what breaks my heart. Seeing Neil finally break from losing all 3 girls in such a short amount of time is breaking my heart. Autumn was his baby. Allison and I got her to help bring him out of his depression when he lost his job.

I am very happy that, for that last 2 months of her life she lived. She loved exploring with us. I just wish it could have been longer.
